Germany scored four goals for the third time at this World Cup, as they thrashed Argentina 4-0 in the quarter-finals.

After a poor qualification campaign, Argentina had lit up these finals with some exciting attacking play. However, they failed to make the most of their chances and their defence couldn't cope with the pace and quality of Germany's attacking players.

South Africa have become the first World Cup hosts to go out at the group stage of the tournament.

Even though they beat a poor France side 2-1, South Africa lost out to Mexico on goal difference. France's shocking tournament ended with them scoring just one goal and finishing bottom of Group A.

France got off to a bad start when Yoan Gourcuff was given a harsh red card for use of the elbow just five minutes after South Africa had gone a goal up. They scored a second before half-time, but failed to put away a few more excellent chances. They needed to win by a few goals to go through, but allowed France to pull one back, with Florent Malouda tapping in.

Uruguay beat Mexico 1-0 thanks to a header from Luis Suarez and topped Group A. Uruguay will now face South Korea in the round of 16, with Mexico facing Argentina in what could be a fantastic match.

Argentina won all of their games to top Group B, beating an awful Greece team 2-0 in their final match. Greece showed an almost total lack of ambition and will not be missed by many football fans. Greece failed to go through because South Korea took second place in the group by holding Nigeria to an exciting 2-2 draw. Nigeria missed a couple of excellent chances to win the game and go through, and continued the bad run of form of the African teams in the World Cup.

Look: historically, I'm not a morning person. And to top it off, I was grimacing through some lower back pain that flowered over the weekend. So when you noticed me (white guy, brown hair, blue/white striped shirt, earphones, red book) and I noticed you (white girl, brown hair, nosering, headphones, blue book) for however brief a moment this morning, it was bolstering and made me forget the knife in my back. Haven't noticed you before, but if there's a next time, maybe I can slap myself out of the morning slumber and say hey. No promises, though.

A las razones que se suelen postular a favor del conocimiento de varios idiomas se suma la constatación de otra más: los alumnos que en el colegio aprenden una lengua extranjera tienen mejores resultados en el aprendizaje de la lengua materna.
Así lo indica un estudio que hizo el Ministerio de Educación español y el British Council sobre la experiencia de 120 colegios públicos bilingües de España que tienen inglés como segunda lengua, y cuyo resultado publicó el diario El País, de Madrid, días atrás. Los especialistas argentinos también lo corroboran en nuestro país.
La mejoría en el aprendizaje de la lengua materna se verifica no sólo en aquellos chicos que concurren a una institución bilingüe, sino también en quienes reciben una enseñanza intensificada en una segunda lengua, como sucede en los colegios plurilingües públicos de la ciudad de Buenos Aires.
"Están probados los beneficios. A veces, ya dentro del primer año, los chicos empiezan esta reflexión que les permite, por ejemplo, descubrir el orden del adjetivo y el sustantivo. Las mismas actividades que se utilizan los llevan a establecer comparaciones y a desarrollar esa plasticidad para moverse de una lengua a la otra", indicó a LA NACION Teresa Davis, profesora de inglés, quien trabajó en el inicio del proyecto de las escuelas plurilingües porteñas.
Actual directora ejecutiva del Centro Universitario de Idiomas (CUI) de la UBA, Davis señaló: "En las escuelas de contextos más desfavorables, es mucho más evidente que el aprendizaje de una lengua extranjera permite al chico desarrollar más su lengua materna y hasta su autoestima".
La especialista indicó que los beneficios de aprender una segunda lengua se han podido constatar no sólo con la enseñanza del inglés, sino también con la del francés, el portugués y el italiano.
Los chicos que asisten a las escuelas plurilingües tienen ocho horas de clase semanales de lengua extranjera a partir de primer grado, y en cuarto grado se incorpora la enseñanza de una segunda lengua, con una carga horaria de tres horas semanales. Estas instituciones son de doble jornada.
Con más confianza
Lucila Gassó, experta en lenguas extranjeras, señaló: "Las investigaciones de numerosas experiencias internacionales y en nuestro país demuestran que la enseñanza de dos lenguas refuerza otros aprendizajes, especialmente el de la lengua materna, y representa importantes beneficios socioculturales, cognitivos, psicológicos y lingüísticos".
Además, su trabajo en el CUI le permite a Gassó comprobar que los alumnos que saben una o más lenguas extranjeras "encaran el estudio de un nuevo idioma con confianza y entusiasmo", mientras que aquellos que se acercan a la experiencia por primera vez o tuvieron una historia de fracasos en la escuela "lo hacen con temor y desconfianza de sus propias posibilidades de aprender una nueva lengua".
Eduardo Minces, médico especialista en psiquiatría, explicó: "El aprendizaje de distintos idiomas conlleva la puesta en marcha de mecanismos psíquicos complejos, que implican no sólo una mera traducción de los significados de sus palabras, sino también la comprensión de distintas estructuras gramaticales, reglas lógicas y orden asociativo, por nombrar algunas características diferenciales".
Asimismo, Minces sostuvo que, si bien el logro del aprendizaje simultáneo en edad temprana, cuando la maduración neurológica y psíquica están en pleno desarrollo, podría fortalecer la capacidad de comprensión del sujeto y un mejor desarrollo intelectual posterior, la adquisición de una segunda lengua debe estar suspeditada a "condiciones que tienen que ser cuidadosamente evaluadas en cada caso".
Al respecto, el estudio realizado en España arrojó que un 10% de los alumnos tiene dificultades para enfrentarse a dos lenguas. El profesor de la Universidad de La Laguna y especialista en lenguas extranjeras, Plácido Bazo, subrayó al diario El País "el peso cognitivo que supone realizar un aprendizaje con doble simetría de habilidades lectoescritoras, que no sólo aumenta el tiempo de dedicación a estas técnicas, sino también las habilidades de pensamiento al integrar las dobles formas y estrategias de cada una de las lenguas".
Y agregó que es ese esfuerzo que una parte del alumnado no puede realizar lo que obliga a reconocer un abandono o fracaso cercano al 10 por ciento.
"Del estudio que se hizo en España no surge que los chicos que son bilingües tengan más capacidades cognitivas, es decir, que sean más inteligentes, sino que desarrollan más estrategias académicas", explicó Florencia Salvarezza, lingüista y coordinadora ejecutiva del Departamento Infanto-Juvenil del Instituto de Neurología Cognitiva (Ineco).
Salvarezza consideró que, en el caso particular del inglés, la modalidad pedagógica de enseñanza de esta lengua es muy fuerte en comprensión de textos y lectura, lo cual los alumnos trasladan al castellano. Por eso, consideró que "hay que replantearse las estrategias pedagógicas en lengua castellana".
VENTAJAS
• De uno a otro. Los chicos que aprenden un idioma extranjero incorporan estructuras gramaticales y lógicas del castellano con más facilidad.
• Lo más difícil. Intensifican su capacidad de comprensión de textos y lectura, dos dificultades frecuentes en el aprendizaje de la lengua materna.
• Autoestima. Están mejor predispuestos para aprender una tercera lengua y manifiestan cambios en su autoconfianza para estudiar.
• Con menos, más. Los beneficios son particularmente notorios en los chicos de contextos sociales más desfavorecidos.

David Beckham's World Cup hopes have been dashed by an Achilles tendon injury while during a match for AC Milan. Read more about it here...
David Beckham's hopes of making the England World Cup team are over after the football star snapped his Achilles tendon in a game against AC Chievo Verano.
Beckham injured his achilles tendon, even though he did not come into contact with another player during the match.
England manager Fabio Capello said it looks likely that Beckham will miss the World Cup, in June: "We have to wait for the results of the scan, but it looks like he is out of the World Cup.
"David is a great professional and has worked very hard to be ready for the World Cup, so missing it will be a big blow.
"I am very sad for David that he has suffered this injury."

Posting on his website yesterday, Beckham said: "I am on my way to Finland to see a specialist and have a scan on the injury.

"I am upset but want to thank everyone for their messages of support.

"I hope to make a swift and full recovery."

Doctors are confident that Beckham will make a full recovery from the surgery he had yesterday to repair his Achilles tendon. Just not in time for the World Cup.

A TEENAGE truant is paying the price for stopping a suicidal woman from jumping to her death.

He has been hailed a hero – but has also been given a lunchtime detention for skipping school.

Oliver Adams, 15, had sneaked out to buy a bag of chips when he spotted the distraught woman poised to throw herself off a footbridge on to a busy road.

The schoolboy grabbed her arms just as she was about to leap and coaxed her back to safety.

Oliver, from Romford, Essex, told how he spotted the woman clutching a metal barrier waiting for the lights to change from red to green over the packed A12.

The woman said she had to end her life but Oliver, who climbed up to reach her, said: “You don’t have to do this.”

The distressed woman told him: “I’m a bad person. I don’t deserve to live.” But Oliver would not give up and managed to help her back from the brink.

The youngster said: “I tried to convince her to come back over. I was really worried. When I told her not to do it she was loosening her grip slightly.”

Oliver’s father Paul, 47, said: “This lady was over the barrier.He said, ‘don’t do it’. He was watching her and her hands looked like they were going to release their grip so he grabbed her arms.

“She said ‘I’m really scared’ and he said ‘come over the barrier, then you won’t be scared’.”

Mr Adams described Oliver’s detention as “a bit harsh” but added that “rules are rules”.

“At the time he kept quiet about what happened because he knew he shouldn’t have been out and he is very modest but his friend told people what he had done,” added Mr Adams.

“It was lucky for this woman that he was out of school – she could have been dead now.

“Other people were just walking past.”

Prudence Pattison, Head of Year 11 at Marshalls Park School, said: “The school is very proud of him. But at the same time we had to remind him that he must be aware he shouldn’t have been offsite at the time.”

The woman Oliver saved is now in hospital.
